Cairns' tropical monsoon climate is the most demanding in Australia for home lift equipment. The wet season from December to March brings extreme humidity (often above 85%), intense rainfall exceeding 2,000mm annually, and temperatures consistently between 24°C and 32°C. The dry season is more comfortable but humidity remains elevated compared to temperate Australia.
Mould and biological growth are persistent challenges in Cairns' climate. Lift interiors, particularly carpeted cabin floors and enclosed shaft spaces, require ventilation strategies and mould-resistant materials to maintain hygiene and appearance. Dehumidifiers and air circulation systems for enclosed lift shafts are a worthwhile investment in the tropics.
The Atherton Tablelands, at elevations above 700 metres, offer a dramatically cooler microclimate than the coastal lowlands. Properties in Kuranda, Mareeba, and Atherton itself experience temperatures 5-8°C cooler than Cairns, with lower humidity. Standard lift specifications are appropriate in these elevated areas, though waterproofing for the high annual rainfall remains important.
